Studies on the Seed Propagation of Ornamental Plants

Abstract
This study reports the cold requirements for seed dormancy breaking of some ornamental plants to establish the most effective methods of seed propagation. Seed dormancy of T. ocidentalis was broken when the seed was dry stored at room temperature in winter season and also by wet and low temperature treatment. Cold moist treatment could break the seed dormancy of E. alatus and P. coccinea, and the most effective low temperature was 0¡É. At this temperature, they required 4 and 11 weeks, respectively, and longer period was required at 5¡É or 10¡É to break the seed dormancy. Seeds of E. japonica germinated well despite of the temperatrure of 0, 5, and 10¡É, and their chilling periods exceeded more than 7 weeks.
